A finales de 1910 Julio Camba llegó a Londres procedente de París para hacerse cargo de la corresponsalía del diario El Mundo. Durante algo más de un año escribió alrededor de ciento cincuenta artículos todo un récord para alguien que presumía de vago sobre una ciudad oculta habitualmente bajo la niebla, con Sherlock Holmes todavía en activo y el largo reinado de la reina Victoria, fallecida nueve años antes, aún vivo en la memoria de sus habitantes. Fruto de esa experiencia periodística, y de otra posterior y más breve de 1913, surgió Londres. Cincuenta años después de la muerte de Camba, la City sigue empeñada en darle la razón. Mantiene su seriedad británica, su afán por la puntualidad y los ferrocarriles y esa gastronomía austera que él logró sobrellevar con su peculiar humor y el atrevimiento provocador característico de sus primeros libros.
